We get up, we go to work, we come home and we plan for the weekend. Most of us will happily set goals of what we would like to do in our free time, yet work, something that takes up some a huge proportion of our lives, we attend mindlessly.

Why not make the most out of work? Setting careers goals is extremely important not only in testing and finding out your own capabilities but also ensuring that you are the happiest you can be in your job. Here are 3 reasons you need to set career goals today:

It will drive you forward

Setting achievable goals in work in blunt terms, gives you a reason to want to go there in the morning. If you wake up with the view that it will be another monotonous day by which you coast through, how will you ever view it as an enjoyable place to be? But by setting and achieving targets, if other people aren’t finding ways to motivate you, at least you are able to motivate yourself.

Unfortunately, a lot of roles don’t have incentives or targets to work towards, and this will often decrease the performance of a team as a whole. However if you are visibly working hard this could make you stand out to those in charge, as self motivation is a trusted quality for those who are put into leadership roles.

You might discover your passion lies elsewhere

If you set career goals in your current job, yet find that there are limitations and you are unable to achieve what you want in an area you want to, then this could highlight that your current career might not be suited for you. If those around you don’t support you, setting your own goals and targets allows a way for you to feel as though you are achieving something and your ability to do so can increase your confidence without the reliance on others.

As you increase your own accolades it may be apparent that you have outgrown the company you work in. if you know you are capable of driving yourself, there isn’t any reason why you couldn’t expand a business of your own.

After all, in the famous words of Amelia Earhart ‘The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity’.
