Feeling low or upset? – How to start to change your life around.


Life is an interesting adventure, there will be plenty of highs, but also we need to prepare for the inevitable lows.  Whilst one problem can make some people feel unable to cope, it seems even harder therefore to see a way through when all the chips appear to be down at once. However, the wonderful thing about life is that we can change it all around and this journey starts first and foremost with ourselves. Congratulations on reading this far as you clearly want to take charge of your life. Having the strength to accept the things we cannot change

Before you can make a change you first have to be clear about what is within your control and what is not.  Life is wasted if we spend time agonising over things that we wish were different but never will be. Try and determine fact from fiction, and remember that the past or future is just a story that we tell ourselves. Focus instead on the things that you have the ability to change right now, and make these changes one step at a time with the wisdom to let go of what is not within your control. If things aren’t working out on your current journey then find a new direction

There is one thing that we can be sure about in life, and that is that we will experience change and things will rarely be exactly as we planned them. If you find that you are travelling down a path and have appeared to have met a block in the road, or indeed a dead end, then it is time to open your mind to new paths and reroute your journey . Who knows it may even be a more scenic route!

Taking others’ opinions out of the equation

If you spend your life trying to mind read what others are thinking about you, then not only will you get it wrong, but you will be wasting time on people who don’t matter and life is too short for that. Those who really care for you will only want to see you happy. Mind reading is also fictional as we don’t really know what is happening in others’ minds. A good advert that celebrates mind reading in context is the Durex advert from years ago whereby a boy was buying his first condoms and was very worried about what the lady at the till would think of him, meanwhile in her mind she was deciding what she would have for dinner. People care too much for themselves to give you much thought, so only focus your  time, thought and energy on the people who care for you.

Look for the good in others

If we go into a conversation with the belief that others are kind, genuine and believe in us, then we give more of ourselves and can start to create a bond. To really discover good people in life we need to aim to look only for the good in them as we may never be proved wrong. But if we look for the bad we are likely to be proven right every time whether this was a fact or not.

Breaking down the bigger picture

This is a very well known saying, but nevertheless is true. If we try to put right all of the things that are going wrong all at once then we can feel overwhelmed. Instead take each aspect of your life, family, friends, work, money, health etc and write into a row on a horizontal line and put a numerical value on the vertical. Select 10 as a point where everything is great and 0 as it is not good at all. Now draw the graph for each aspect of your life and accept where you are right now. Next consider what you can actually change about each aspect of your life and make small steps towards each area of your life with a daily plan to tackle each individual goal.

Bring goals to life

Now that you know what aspects of your life require work then you can start to break it down into daily steps. For example if you feel overweight, are single and have no job or money it can seem pretty overwhelming to look at the goal of being slim with a great boyfriend and lucrative job. However, instead, if you set the main goal as a future aim and then make a small goal for each aspect that you can act upon daily then you can start to make your dream become a reality. For example you could dedicate 20 minutes daily exercise to the health goal,  apply for one job a day and join a free dating site (paid are available) and agree to meet a new person (in a safe and familiar place) once a week. This means that each day you are doing something proactive towards your overall goal.

Give to others

In life we only really progress and enjoy life when we help and connect with others, we are not made to be islands. We all have something precious to offer, whether it is comfort in the times of need, the moments we spend helping others to realise their dreams or the gift of loving and caring for others unconditionally. The most precious gift we can give to others is to give something of ourselves. By finding our own gift, and be willing to share this with others, love will come back to us in abundance.[How to live with a purpose]

Seek out opportunities

If we believe our life is never going to improve and that we are at a dead end, then  ultimately we will be right. However, if we seek to find opportunities and see everything that happens with optimism and hope then we will always find many more opportunities in life. To be happy we need hope and with hope opportunities present themselves, these opportunities give us meaning and with meaning there is so much to live for.
