How are you feeling?

The best way to not fall apart

If you are facing a serious struggle that has greatly affected your life, breakdowns are common and nothing to be ashamed of. Your coping mechanisms may have been tested too far and when you don’t know what to do, you will likely fall apart.

Get realistic

Bearing it and refusing to fall apart is foolish and denies the severity of the situation. If you need help, you should get it as soon as possible. Falling apart is normally due to letting stress build until it becomes unmanageable. [How to manage the root causes of stress] The pressure increases beyond capacity and you explode. The desire to appear resilient is pointless if you’re not actually being resilient. Instead of bearing the problem, tackle it. Putting up with something won’t make it go away.

Taking control

William Glasser’s choice theory identifies the five factors which humans desire for a good life. They are fun, freedom, power, survival and belonging. The trouble with these ideas is that they are rooted in selfishness. Most people are unable to make the right choices to ensure these things are in their lives because they don’t understand that you need to think of more than your needs to get them. Falling apart happens when you strive for these factors but have depended too much on yourself and wanted too much for yourself. You become overwhelmed. Glasser’s theory explains that the five factors come into you life the more decisive you are. Cut through your overwhelment and make some decisions. [The questions you need to ask yourself if you are feeling overwhelmed] Think about who those decisions will affect and consult them. You will have to let some things go, but your life will be simplified and easier to manage.

Don’t trip yourself up

No matter how hard we try to prevent it, we do find ourselves falling apart. What matters then is how you react to it. Some people have the ground open up under them but others will dig the hole deeper. Being defeatist or self-sabotaging just because things are going bad is too easy. You need to go against the current and stop it. The danger after falling apart is acceptance of your situation. You assume you deserved it and lose motivation to change you circumstances. [How to motivate yourself through times of failure] It is then that you have become your problem. It might help to take on a different challenge that you can work on and leave the challenges that led to you breaking down behind you. There comes a time where we have to prove we’re made of something tougher. Falling apart is often not one singular but a process over time which will test our endurance. How long can you endure watching yourself deteriorate? The further into the process you go, the harder it becomes to retract from it. Catch your descent as soon as possible and don’t let yourself fall apart.
