How are you feeling?

Where does your drive for work come from?

Most of those who are successful attribute it to the fact that it’s because they are doing what they love. Likewise, those of us who hate our jobs rarely feel we are successful at them, yet we sacrifice enjoyment for the comfort of stability. Considering the amount of time work occupies in our lives, to not have a passion for it seems obscure. Where does your drive for work come from? And if you don’t have one, how can you find it?

The idea that you can have a career that both pays you well and be enjoyable may appear, for some, to be a farfetched dream. It is also the case that with continuous warnings about the lack of jobs, we may grasp at the most stable ones available and push our passion to the side. At this point we may then write our careers off as a necessary, but unenjoyable, aspect of our lives and excuse ourselves from looking for something we actually do want to do. Therefore, ask yourself these following important questions, and let this be a guide as to whether you need to look elsewhere. What do you love to do? What would be your ideal job? Is this a struggle or does it come naturally? It may be useful to think of people whose position you’d aspire to be in, what is it you like about their life?

The Drive

What should a drive for work feel like? Ideally, it would be nice to find a career in which we can lie on a beach and sleep all day. But it is still possible to be able to do work which requires slightly more attention, but that we can find enjoyable? This first begins in doing something that stimulates you, this could be through the reward felt when making a sale or the joy you get from learning about people. What are you known for among friends, being an excellent host or exceptionally organized? The best way to begin is by delving into something you are naturally drawn to. Your enjoyment within this will give you the motivation and patience to excel.

The more you engage yourself in your work the more successful you will become at it, and naturally you will find yourself rising in the ranks. [Why the power is within you to succeed] Many of us may work at an acceptable standard, but never push forward because of our lack of interest in what we are doing. We might feel we have a right for a promotion because we have been there for a certain amount of time, but we never show levels beyond what has been required. For employers, if we have not shown we can achieve more than our current job, how are we able to succeed at higher levels?

Our passion might not lie in working for someone else’s business, but one we wish to pursue ourselves. In this case, having passion is the fuel which will drive your venture forward – along with those who work for you. For this reason, it is useful to be sure of your passion. What may seem like a nice idea to begin with can soon exhaust you until you wish you had never started – wasting a lot of time and money.

If you are lucky enough to already know what you are passionate about, then put it to good use. Having the bravery to chase it could completely transform your life and turn your work into a hobby and Monday mornings into one of your favourite times of the week.
